Tension Rises In Surat As Patidars Torch Buses And Bikes, Varachhaicon

The vehicles were targeted by a mob protesting against the detention of a few members of the Patidar community in Surat. Ripple effects of the violence were felt in Ahmedabad too.

Ahead of high profile visit of Prime Minister NarendraModi and his Japan counterpart Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, tension gripped Gujarat's Diamond city where youth BJP workers and Patidar agitation activists clashed that led to rioting in Patidar dominated Varachha area of the city.

Following the clashes, a mob torched BRTS buses while several bus stands were vandalised as the police detained Patidar agitation activists.The members of Patidar community set buses on fire in Varachha area of Surat after cops detained their community members for disrupting a BJP YuvaMorcha rally.

The Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel has threatened to intensify the agitation if the arrested youth were not released immediately.

The trouble began after some Patidars hurled eggs, tomatoes and stones at BJP workers and even the policemen when BJP YuvaMorcha event was on in Varachha. The Patidars and supporters of PatidarAnamatAndolanSamiti (PAAS) were protesting outside the BJP YuvaMorcha event being held at Saurashtra Patel SamajBhavan near MangadhChowk.

They gathered in small groups outside the venue and shouted slogans of 'Jay Sardar Jay Patidar' as Rutvij Patel, president of BJYM, was participating.

Soon the protest turned violent and they started pelting stones, eggs and tomatoes at police and BJP supporters. The crowd then torched a bus on BRTS track within 30 minutes.

According to sources from Surat, the protests intensified after Gujarat youth BJP President Rutvij Patel arrived at the event where hundreds of Patidar youngsters were protesting. To control the protesting crowd,Surat Police resorted to lathi-charging the Patidar protesters.

Subsequently, cops detained more than 20 members of the Patel community, which seems to have furthered angered the Patidars, who are on warpath with the ruling BJP in the state.
